Gilded Painting – Supplicant Mary

Supplicant Mary

This is a copy of The Supplicant Mary from the World Heritage St Catherine’s Monastery at Mt Sinai, Egypt. It uses a gessoed board with acrylic paint on a dutch gold leaf background.

St Catherine’s Monastery is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The official name is “Sacred Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai.” It has in its collection over half of the world’s existing Byzantine icons.  This monastery houses one of the best collections of early icons in the world. The site also contains the world’s oldest continually operating library containing early codices and manuscripts, second only in size to the Vatican.
